SPAR is a voluntary trading organisation – distinct from a franchised business. Upon becoming a SPAR member you immediately join your fellow retailers as part of the SPAR Guild of Retailers. This means you won’t be dictated to by a corporate structure, as you are a partner with the freedom and flexibility of choosing your product range; and also have input into the pricing and strategy of growing your own business within the particular community it serves.

History
From humble beginnings
In the 1960’s with the emergence of grocery chains in South Africa, an ambitious group made up of 8 wholesalers were given exclusive rights to the SPAR name to service 500 small retailers. Thanks to hard work and a fantastic business model, we have grown our brand into the winning formula it is today. After 50 years, the value in taking care of our storeowners and customers remains the foundation of our business.
