Caramelised Onions and other tasty toppings Recipe

Give your boerie rolls the edge with one of these excellent topping ideas.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 3 SPAR Freshline onions, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon SPAR olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon SPAR butter
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup SPAR Freshline parsley, chopped

Recipe Method

  1. Heat a large pan over a medium heat and add the olive oil. Heat gently.
  2. Add the butter and let melt.
  3. Add the onion slices and stir to coat the onions with the oil.
  4. Spread the onions out evenly over the pan and let cook, stirring occasionally.
  5. After 10 minutes season with salt & pepper.
  6. Let cook for 30 minutes stirring every few minutes until golden brown.
  7. Add the parsley and stir well.
  8. Top your hot dog/boerewors roll while onions are warm. Squeeze mustard on the onions to give it a kick.

Hints & Tips

Try some of these toppings.  Just mix the ingredients together, rest for 10 minutes to let the flavours develop and scoop onto your hot dog or boerie roll. 


Coleslaw

  • 1 SPAR Freshline baby green cabbage, finely sliced
  • 1 SPAR Freshline baby purple cabbage, finely sliced
  • ¼ cup SPAR Freshline coriander, roughly chopped
  • 3 tablespoon SPAR olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon SPAR vinegar
  • 2 teaspoon SPAR soya sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon SPAR lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon sesame oil



Spicy Pineapple Salsa

  • 1 SPAR Freshline pineapple, finely chopped
  • 1 small SPAR Freshline onion, finely chopped
  • ½ green pepper, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup SPAR pickled jalapeno chillies
  • Salt & pepper, to taste



Mexican Corn Salsa

  • 2 whole SPAR Freshline corn, cooked and sliced off the cob
  • 6 SPAR Freshline baby tomatoes, diced
  • 1 small green SPAR Freshline chilli, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon SPAR olive oil
  • 2 teaspoon fresh lime juice
  • ½ cup SPAR feta, crumbled (stir in gently at the end)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
